If you're going to understand Kansas, you have to know about the Jayhawk!

Find some pictures of what a Jayhawk looks like, historically, and now. Then tell what a Jayhawk is!
Remember: there are many different definitions, with some not talking about the University of Kansas

The University of Kansas is home of the Jayhawk, a mythical bird with a fascinating history. Its origin is rooted in the historic struggles of Kansas settlers. The term "Jayhawk" was probably coined about 1848. Accounts of its use appeared from Illinois to Texas. The name combines two birds--the blue jay, a noisy, quarrelsome thing known to rob other nests, and the sparrow hawk, a stealthy hunter. The message here: Don't turn your back on this bird. -http://www.ku.edu/about/traditions/jayhawk.shtml

"Le nom combine deux oiseaux -- le geai bleu, une chose bruyante et querelleuse connue pour voler d'autres emboîtements, et le faucon de moineau, un chasseur furtif. Le message ici : Ne tournez pas le dos à cet oiseau."

I like that description! :-)
Well, it was originally a name for the Kansans who fought during the bleeding Kansas era and the American Civil war. But now it is known as a mythical bird that just happens to be KU's mascot.
Heres what I could find.
* Kansas Jayhawks athletics teams and their official mascot
* Muskegon Community College athletics nickname
* the mascot for Jamestown Community College
* the school mascot for Head-Royce School in Oakland, California
* the school mascot for the now closed Jamestown High School in Jamestown, Kansas

* the school mascot for Jericho High School in Jericho, New York

* the school mascot of Jefferson Central School, Jefferson, New York
